What is an ASIN? Amazon Standard Identification Number

Quick Definition

An ASIN is a unique 10-character alphanumeric code that Amazon assigns to every product in its catalog. It's used to identify and look up specific products.

ASIN Format and Structure

Every ASIN is exactly 10 characters long and starts with "B0" for most products. For books, the ASIN is the same as the ISBN-10. You can find a product's ASIN in the URL (after /dp/), in the product details section, or by searching the Amazon catalog. Example: B0CKJNX3DB.

How ASINs Are Used

Sellers use ASINs to look up competitor products, track pricing, monitor reviews, and analyze sales performance. Product research tools like AstroMarket accept ASINs as input to generate detailed market analysis. ASINs are also critical for Amazon PPC campaigns, where you can target specific competitor products.

Parent and Child ASINs

Products with variations (size, color, etc.) have a parent ASIN and multiple child ASINs. The parent ASIN groups all variations together, while each child ASIN represents a specific variant. Reviews and BSR can accumulate differently across parent and child levels.

ASIN vs UPC vs SKU

A UPC (Universal Product Code) is a manufacturer-assigned barcode used across all retailers. A SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is an internal code a seller creates for inventory management. An ASIN is Amazon-specific. When creating a new listing, Amazon may require a UPC to generate an ASIN, unless you have Brand Registry.
