What is Private Label? Guide for Amazon Sellers

Quick Definition

Private label is a business model where you source generic products from manufacturers and sell them under your own brand name with custom packaging, logos, and modifications.

How Private Label Works

Find a product with strong demand and room for improvement. Source a manufacturer (typically on Alibaba) who makes that product. Add your branding — custom packaging, logo, insert cards, and potentially product modifications. Register your brand with Amazon Brand Registry. Launch with optimized listings and PPC. You own the listing and the brand, unlike reselling existing brands.

Private Label vs Other Models

Wholesale: buy existing brands at bulk prices and resell on established listings. Retail/Online Arbitrage: buy discounted items from stores and resell. Private Label: create your own branded products. Wholesale and arbitrage are lower risk and faster to start, but you're competing on other people's listings. Private label has higher upfront investment but gives you full control over pricing, listing, and brand equity.

Startup Costs

A typical private label launch costs $2,000–$8,000: product samples ($100–$500), initial inventory order ($1,000–$5,000 depending on MOQ), product photography ($200–$500), brand registry and trademark ($250–$400), and initial PPC budget ($500–$1,000). You can start smaller with simpler products or domestic suppliers.

Choosing Private Label Products

Look for products with: consistent demand (not seasonal or trendy), selling price between $15–$50, lightweight and small (reduces FBA fees), room for improvement based on competitor reviews, and not dominated by major brands.
